Ares Zombies at GenCon 2022: The Fall of Fort Wayne

In August 2022, we hosted a linked series of 28mm zombies miniatures events, where the mayhem in each scenario was carried over and affected the following scenarios. Here are some images form these games, with some narrative. We hope you enjoy them!

Scenario One: An Ordinary Day

Day One, 4PM

We interrupt your regularly scheduled programming for this breaking news update. A series of violent attacks have been reported in the Chapel Oaks and East Central neighborhoods of the city.  The attacks have occurred at four locations, with dozens of wounded. Two FWPD officers have been killed by assailants, with four other officers and three Fort Wayne fire department paramedics being sent to St Joseph Hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, at least four different individuals attacked bystanders with their hands and teeth. These attackers seemed to observers to be under the influence something like bath salts or angel dust, and fought on even after being shot by police and armed civilians.

Police officials have declared a curfew in the city, requesting residents to return to their homes and for local businesses to temporarily close until the violence has been halted. The disruptions have led to numerous traffic backups as residents leave the downtown area. For more information on the traffic snarl-ups around the city, let’s turn to Alison Gomez at the WFTW 4 traffic center. Alison?

A peaceful afternoon. Boy Scouts, an old man in a scooter walks his dog. But two car crashes? And all those police sirens? And is that a BODY on the road?!

The players, and the gamemaster (Elizabeth)

Things start to heat up at the food truck area. The magnifying glass on the city transit bus means the location has been searched for useful items.

Indiana National Guardsmen, on their way to the Armory, pick up two high school students.

…but they spin out after hitting a zombie. Note the high schoolers at the top of the image, making a run from the stalled pickup truck.

Mayhem at the main intersection downtown, as the mall cops set out to prove they’re heroes too!

Others are ambushed as they try to sneak down a side alley.

The last scenes of the day. The mall cops make their last stand, as the Guardsman try to punch through to safety. Sadly, they failed their final driving test and wipe out, ending their run for the armory.

Scenario Two, The Beginning of the End

Day Two, 1PM

This is Rod Fresner at the WFTW broadcast center, in for Sassy Sullivan, who is on location near St. Joseph’s Hospital. Since yesterday, a rising series of riots and violence have gripped our city. Crowds of rioters have been violently attacking bystanders, police, firefighters, and paramedics.

In a morning press conference at City Hall, Mayor Joseph Sciuli announced a citywide curfew, requesting that residents remain in their homes, locking all doors and windows. Police Chief Marcy Dzukic announced that police from around northeast Indiana are converging on the city to support local law enforcement.

During the question and answer for the press conference, Mayor Sciuli dismissed claims that attackers were reanimated bodies, saying “There’s no such thing as zombies!” Minutes later, a group of maniacs attacked the mayor and the police chief, killing both, wounding police and scattering reporters, including our own Sassy Sullivan, who at this time is unlocated.

In a 12pm tweet, Governor Miley stated that Indiana National Guard units in northeast Indiana are being mobilized, and they will begin enforcing a cordon around Fort Wayne at 6PM. After that time, no residents or vehicles will be allowed to enter or leave Fort Wayne.

In other local news, the Umbrella Corporation provided details of the planned expansion of their Midwest Research hub in Fort Wayne, which should provide hundreds of high paying jobs for the city.

Scenario Three, We All Fall Down

Day 5, morning

It’s quieter this morning. After all the sirens and screams, the gunfire and helicopter sounds, all that’s left are the low moans from the walking dead.

Two days ago, the Army seemed to have things under control. You could see their patrols on the streets, wiping out pockets of the dead and fending off attacks by ones and two and threes. Until all of the sudden, the twos and threes became tens and twenties. The soldiers put up a good fight, but the zombies were everywhere, in every direction. The rec center base was overrun-they even left a fully intact helicopter right there on the soccer field. A lot of those poor soldiers are still here, but they’re now patrolling for the other side…

The thing is, you should have gotten out when you had the chance on day two. Now the TV and the radio are repeating recorded messages, that’s when the power isn’t flickering or out. And you can’t drink the tap water because it’s got a smell that tells you it’s not safe to drink. You’re going to have to make a break for it sometime, but there’s always zombies milling about on the streets below your apartment.

Wait! What the hell was that noise? It sounded like a big explosion, a few blocks south of you. Look! The z’s around your building are shambling off to the south!

This is your chance! You’ve got to take it! The last live update said that the east was the safest route to get to the military cordon lines around the city. Makes sense since that direction is away from downtown! You’ve got to grab your stuff and go east!
